Newcastle has been named England's noisiest urban area and its residents are at risk of serious health and hearing problems, according to new research.
The constant din of traffic gave the city an average decibel level of 80.4, closely followed by Birmingham with 79.1 decibels and London with 78.5 decibels.
With an average decibel level of 60, Devon's Torquay was named the quietest of the 41 English towns and cities in the report, which was compiled by the Ear Institute at the University College London (UCL) and hearing aid manufacturer Widex.
Professor Deepak Prasher, from UCL's Ear Institute, warned: "Noise pollution in our towns and cities is a growing problem and can have a serious long-term impact on our health and well-being.
"Noise not only annoys but also can raise our stress levels and associated hormone levels. It can disturb sleep and increase the risk of heart disease and if the noise is loud enough it can lead to permanent hearing impairment and tinnitus."
Double glazing can drastically reduce noise pollution levels at home.
