Installing double glazing in a home could boost resident happiness as people suffering from noise pollution can be the unhappiest, according to a new study.
Research by the universities of Manchester and Sheffield has named the areas of Brecknock, Montgomery and Radnor in Powys, Wales as having the happiest people in Britain.
The lack of noise pollution in the sparsely-populated areas was cited as being a major factor in the increased happiness of people living in the areas.
In the study, which was presented at the Royal Geographical Society this week, data from the British Household Panel Survey and the national census were used, with the former containing questions based on people's happiness.
Dimitris Ballas, joint researcher at the University of Sheffield, has said that the "intrinsic nature of places" can influence the "happiness and wellbeing" of people living there.
"The environment, lack of green spaces, air and noise pollution, crime rates: all of these influence happiness," he added.
It was recently reported by the Press and Journal that people in Aberdeen who wanted to install a domestic wind turbine could have their application rejected if the noise would impact on residents without double glazing living nearby.
