Installing double glazing is one way people can ensure they have peaceful homes, regardless of how busy their neighbourhood is, one commentator notes.
Speaking to the Guardian, John Hinton, president of the Institute of Acoustics, suggests that thermal double glazing can block out the noise of busy streets.
For the noisiest of areas, Mr Hinton recommends investing in secondary glazing, which involves adding an extra window pane approximately four inches inside an already double glazed window.
The expert also notes that aircraft noise can be reduced with sound insulation in the loft and that of chatty neighbours by adding another layer of plasterboard to walls.
Also speaking to the Guardian, Londoner John Stewart asserts that taking some of these measures is very important as "there is evidence to show that finding peace and quiet can help people physically, emotionally and mentally".
In related news, recent figures from the Energy Saving Trust show that fitting double glazing can also reduce people's energy bills by a significant amount.
Double glazing windows and doors significantly reduce noise levels inside your home. With Energy Efficiency windows and doors as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint.
