Suffolk residents would be at considerable risk of exposure to noise pollution if plans were to go ahead for a second runway at Stansted Airport, according to officials in the area.

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Babergh district council has released a report documenting the likely effect of the runway on people's quality of life.

"In terms of increased volume of air traffic, it is inevitable that those within the flight paths will experience increased noise pollution," the report states.

"Wider effects may also be detrimental, particularly in respect of CO2 emissions and global warming," it continues.

"A further concern is the likely impact of traffic generation on roads within Babergh (including Sudbury)."

The newspaper reports that the objections will be discussed by the council's strategy committee this week.

In other recent noise pollution news, Coventry Airport is fighting for permission to build a new terminal despite similar opposition from locals.

The base's representatives took their campaign to the high court last week after transport secretary Ruth Kelly rejected their plans on environmental and noise pollution grounds.
