As much as 80 per cent of complaints about noisy neighbours go unreported, Direct Line Home Insurance has claimed.
The company found that ten per cent of homeowners endure excessive noise from neighbours, but eight out of ten are too afraid to tell the police or authorities.
According to the survey, the number of households affected by neighbourly disturbance has increased by almost a third (31 per cent) in five years.
"The problem with noisy neighbours is that its a constant worry for homeowners and there is no getting away from it, meaning that it affects people in their everyday lives," said David Moxon, Head of Psychology at Peterborough Regional College
He urged people not to ignore the problem as it could be affecting their health.
Waveney District Council (WDC) recently introduced an out-of-hours noise pollution hotline so that people can report problems to the authority.
