The Energy Savings Trust (EST) has cautioned that private dwellings built between 1920 and 1980 are unlikely to have adequate insulation.

A spokesman added that many new builds will also fall short of the government's energy efficiency targets unless they were constructed after strict new building regulations came into force last year.

This has prompted the trust to advise that all UK homeowners concerned about the impact of their property on the environment should research the level of insulation in their houses.

EST spokesman Rob Bell noted that many people are oblivious of the dual financial and environmental benefits of proper insulation and he urged all Britons to consider upgrading their homes.

"I don't think everybody is aware of the fairly simple things they can do in their home to make a big difference to both their comfort and the amount that they are spending on their fuel bills," he said.

Recent research conducted by the British Market Research Bureau found that the majority of Brits are misinformed about green issues.
