A group of experts writing in the Times revealed that the installation of double glazing windows is a small-scale solution for those wanting to improve the energy efficiency of their home.
It added that the installation of solar panels are a key way to achieve a large reduction in carbon emissions but come at a cost of up to £3,000.
The team of architects suggesting home improvements added that insulation is another way of "greening up your home".
"Heat rises, so the most important place for good insulation in a home is in the roof, followed by the walls," they explained.
The secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs, Hillary Benn, revealed last week that reduced-cost loans could be introduced to support home improvements for energy-inefficient properties.
Energy companies should foot the bill for improvements in "vulnerable" households, the cabinet member added.
Double glazing is proven to save heat and energy lost through poorly-insulated windows and doors. With Energy Efficiency windows and doors as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint.
