A former Oxford University professor has won a legal battle over the installation of a uPVC door in her home, it has been revealed.

However, Alison Brading, who suffers from a disability and had the door installed because she no longer had the strength to open her old wooden door, may still face a prison sentence, according to local media reports.

Ms Brading's home's status as a listed building meant that the attempts to secure planning permission have continued for six years, according to the Oxford Mail.

"I have been up before the magistrates again because I did not pay the last fine as I knew this application was in," the pensioner told the paper.

"I was put up before the magistrates and they have committed me to either 45 days in prison or bailiffs.

"They are saying that the two things are completely separate - so I am on the one hand being summonsed and sent to prison for not having replaced my uPVC door with a wooden door while at the same time getting planning permission."

Earlier this month the government unveiled plans to make it easier for homeowners to be granted planning permission for minor changes to their properties.
