Homeowners in Peterborough are being urged to sign up for a government initiative that will help provide green homes through free insulation, it has emerged.
South Kesteven district council (SKDC) is encouraging elderly residents who own or rent their homes to contact local authorities to apply for free loft and cavity wall insulation under the government's Warmfront eco homes scheme, reports the Peterborough Evening Telegraph.
More than a 100 green homes in the South Kesteven region have already been created thanks to receiving heating and insulation improvements from council authorities.
The scheme, set-up by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, is reportedly intended to provide vulnerable homeowners with greater quality life through the installation of insulation or double glazing, which will make their homes warmer amid recent increases in energy bills.
"In light of recent increases in fuel costs, it has become even more important to be energy efficient. Within a matter of months you could have a warmer home," Kevin Martin, service manager for SKDC, told the newspaper.
Loft insulation is the best route to energy-efficient and green homes, saving around 50 per cent of heat in a typical property, commented Rob Bell, energy doctor at the Energy Saving Trust.
