An enterprising and eco-conscious individual across the pond has come up with a colourful alternative to conventional green homes.

Realising that boosting her Massachusetts' house's insulation would ultimately save money and energy, Kathy Shorr invested in a pink product to brighten up her burgeoning construction.

She explained in the Green Guide magazine that the pink foam insulation makes up for a building oversight, as the house's walls are not quite thick enough to keep in heat.

"I'm sure I'm never going to build another house. But if I do, I'll do two-by-six construction so that we have thicker walls and a 5.5-inch-deep wall cavity to fill with insulation, and end up with at least R-18 for insulation," Ms Shorr mused.

She revealed that she is nonetheless pleased to have found exterior insulation which gives her house a rosy hue, for the moment at least.

Another innovative insulation project recently sprung up closer to home, with a Welsh scheme harnessing the heating properties of the nation's sheep in order to provide insulation for homes.
