Police in Preston have warned homeowners to ensure that their doors and windows remain closed when they are out of the room or away from the house after a sharp increase in burglaries in the region.
The number of burglaries taking place in the Lea area in April and May has doubled in comparison to 2006 figures from the same period, according to the Lancashire Evening Post.
Inspector John Ainsworth told the paper that each of the 58 burglaries carried out over the two months had involved the criminal accessing the house via an unlocked door or window.
"The burglaries have been happening in the late afternoon or late evening, not late at night. Offenders are climbing over back walls or gates and they are going in through open doors or climbing through windows.
"People need to make sure their homes are secure at all times."
The news follows a similar message issued by police in Sheffield to students in the city.
