Off-site prefabrication systems for housing may be more eco-friendly because of the early assurance of "air tightness and insulation quality", it has been suggested.

Representatives for the Home Builders Federation also noted that the partial assembly of buildings in a factory environment can be more environmentally friendly because there is "less room for error".

"Manufacturers are more easily able to control performance standards than when things are put together on a building site," explained the organisation's John Slaughter.

He continued: "They have early assurance of air tightness and insulation quality because [the houses are] produced according to specific specifications in a factory environment."

Prefabricated homes, known by experts as 'prefab homes', are dwellings manufactured off-site in advance, usually in standard sections that can be easily shipped and assembled.

The houses' energy efficiency has been noted by an increasing number of professionals who single out their high-quality windows, doors and building materials.

Observers note that a past reputation for low-quality, mass-produced designs led to a large number of consumers being turned off the houses.

Double glazing is proven to save heat and energy lost through poorly-insulated windows and doors. With Energy Efficiency windows and doors as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint.
