Adding or improving a garden can add as much as 12 per cent to the value of a property at the higher end of the market, it has been advised.

Haart estate agents have said that the likes of swimming pools and large quantities of outdoor space provide 12 per cent more value to properties worth at least £600,000, with other benefits also financially attractive.

Advanced home security systems and a cleverly-planned garden design are also valuable, the firm noted, with patio or french doors among the options available to those looking to present their gardens in the best possible light.

"Having a well-designed outdoor space as an extension to the home can vastly improve its versatility and boost its desirability," advised Haart managing director Russell Jervis.

"Currently, rare flowers such as Bleeding Hearts, sculptural trees and natural materials, such as stone and wood are very popular," Mr Jervis added.
