Residents in Edinburgh's Old Town are set to be allowed to install double glazing on their properties following a council u-turn.

They are currently prevented from putting double glazing windows in over fears it would "change the appearance" of properties.

However, the Scotsman reports that the city council are not set to change the rules as the ban "seems to conflict" with initiatives to reduce both household energy bills and carbon emissions.

A trial of different double glazing is set to be launched, following a study which found that energy saving measures can save up to £400 a year on energy costs.

Alistair Cant, director of Lister Housing Co-operative which owns the building, told the newspaper: "These are fantastic buildings, but they are not so good in terms of energy efficiency.

"Double glazing improves the temperature surface of the glass, and if the ban is reviewed it could help people have a better choice of options."

Mark Siddal, an architect, recently told the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette that double glazing was a more "cost-effective" eco-measure for households.
