A detailed survey of properties in Calerdale is underway, to see if recent improvements will help the homes pass the government's fitness test.
The Evening Courier reports that in the past decade some 8.500 houses in the region have been given a revamp, with features such as double glazing and new kitchens being added, as well as work being carried out to make the properties water tight and structurally sound.
A survey will assess some 1,500 homes to see whether these measures have been sufficient.
Speaking to the newspaper, Calderdale council's head of housing Mark Thompson said: "The latest survey will provide us with facts rather than opinions and should indicate how much more will have to be spent to bring Calderdale homes up to standard."
The survey will assess houses selected at random and will be conducted by Michael Dyson Associated of Huddersfield.
