Homeowners have been urged to consider making improvements in order to make their homes more energy efficient before new energy certificates become compulsory prior to sale. The new EU wide legislation will make it compulsory for anyone selling their home to include information about the property on any sale advertisements and literature.
This new push for people to make energy efficient improvements will stimulate the green home improvement industry as many institutions as well as the government urge people to invest in double glazing, insulation and other means of saving money, energy and emissions.
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyor’s (RICS) Head of Sustainability, Martin Russell Croucher, said:
"The move will make energy performance certificates a more formal part of the decision-making process for home buyers.
"It will make it easier for them to compare 'like for like' and could deter them from viewing homes that have poor energy efficiency ratings."
The improvements recommended by the RICS include cladding your hot water pipes, upgrading your boiler and installing cavity wall and loft insulation. They also recommend upgrading to double glazed windows if you don’t currently have them and checking the seals on them if you do.
