New research from leading mutual insurer LV= is suggesting that well-meaning recyclers may be unwittingly broadcasting news of expensive purchases to neighbourhood thieves.
The study found that 37 per cent of consumers leave discarded packaging from electrical purchases outside their home for recycling. Such items typically included branded cardboard boxes for electrical devices like games consoles and DVD players.
A further 5.3 million people leave old goods outside their homes having bought replacements, the poll revealed.
LV= is warning that even disposing of the items in dustbins may not deter burglars, especially given that many councils have now scaled back refuse collections to once a fortnight.
It is therefore advising homeowners to do what 38 per cent of the population already does and take discarded possessions to a local tip. If that is not an option consumers should simply wait until the day of the collection before putting packaging and discarded goods outside their homes.
Another way of increasing home security is to install double glazing, which will bolster the natural defences of your property's most vulnerable entry points as well as adding to the value of your home.
