A Hampshire-based housing association has been recognised for its groundbreaking refurbishment of six homes.
The small-scale project was carried out with the help of the Energy Saving Trust and aimed to showcase the benefits of adopting sustainable energy consumption patterns in private homes.
By deploying a range of green features such as double glazing insulation and solar panels, the six homes have become the first in the country to meet the government's new target of slashing carbon emissions by 60 per cent.
In fact, the refurbished 1950s homes far exceed this target by clocking up an incredible 75 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, down from 9.8 tonnes to 2.4 tonnes annually.
Paul Ciniglio of affordable housing group Radian commented: "This is a wonderful project to have been involved in and I am delighted that a small Hampshire village community have had the opportunity to showcase its success to the rest of the country."
Private dwellings are currently responsible for some 27 per cent of the country's greenhouse gas emissions.
