The Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) has launched a new series of climate change guides intended for use by architects and the general public.

Dubbed the Riba Climate Change Toolkit, the new information packs aim to promote practices that minimise energy waste and encourage uptake of green technologies such as wind turbines and double glazing insulation.

Ewan Willars, head of policy at Riba, said that the guidelines were intended to help both construction professionals and consumers better appreciate the role that buildings play in the hastening the onset of global warning.

Commenting in particular on the significance of the packs to construction professionals, Mr Willars said: "We want to make sure that as many architects as possible are able to understand the issues and to advise clients.

"We are trying to provide the whole story for them but we're providing a critical guide to the information that's out there and to signpost them to where they can get more information."

Government statistics show that personal dwellings are responsible for 27 per cent of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions.
