House prices continued to grow in April, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics).

The institution claimed that 28.9 per cent more chartered surveyors reported an increase in house prices rather than a fall - up from 26.9 per cent in March.

Rics suggests that the market is in rude health, with the pace of increase above the long-run average of 21.6 per cent.

Ian Perry, spokesperson for Rics, said that the market continues to defy expectations – particularly in light of recent interest rate rises.

"Last week's interest rate hike may not be the last as the housing market has not slowed as quickly as expected given the initial round of rate rises," he said.

"With prices buoyant and conditions still tight another rate rise later in the summer looks likely."

Earlier this month, Woolwich revealed that the price of selling property has fallen by ten per cent compared to last year.
