The popularity of Scandinavian-style houses and home furniture has led to a UK trend for large windows which "light up" the inside of a building, it has been suggested.

According to the Birmingham Mail, 'Scandi style' has also seen the proliferation of indoor colour schemes which are conducive to light, airy spaces in the home.

Interior designer Gail Abbott explained to the newspaper that Scandinavia's style is partly inspired by its seasons, with "clear summer light" a dominant feature of the landscape.

"Because of this, light is a quality that is highly valued," she noted, pointing out that "modest window treatments" are often selected to avoid blocking light or creating a cluttered feel.

Traditional Swedish houses are also known to have second, internal windows that act as secondary glazing to keep rooms warm during long winters.

Other tips suggested to individuals who want to make the best of their windows include the use of simple dressings which allow light to filter through, sheer curtains and blinds which maintain seclusion without losing light.

Double glazing windows and doors can increase the value of your property, as well as saving you money on your heating bills. Take a look at some of the Energy Efficiency-certified windows and doors on the Safestyle website.
