Pupils from ten Scottish schools are to go head to head over the coming months in a carbon footprint reduction challenge.
Climate Change Champions (CCC) will see youngsters from across Perth and Kinross exploring the most effective ways of reducing their school's harmful carbon emissions, which add up to more than 246 tonnes per month.
Teachers have said the best teams should be able to reduce pollution by about 20 per cent - not only having a beneficial impact on the environment but also saving the education sector money by lowering energy bills.
Among the measures pupils are being advised to consider are the installation of heat-trapping insulation and the purchasing of renewable energy generators such as photovoltaic solar panels.
When the competition comes to a close in Easter their efforts will be judged by fourteen volunteers from Norwich Union, which is sponsoring the competition with the backing of environmental charity Global Action Plan.
The winning school will receive a £10,000 grant towards the installation of energy efficient technology and there are plans to expand the CCC scheme to other regions over the coming months.
