A number of schools in east Sussex are receiving financial assistance to help improve their energy efficiency.
East Sussex County Council is providing energy equipment for ten schools, which officials claim will reduce energy bills and overall running costs by £35,000 per year, the Argus reports.
The move is part of the council's bid to reduce its carbon footprint - a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of greenhouse gases - by 14 per cent by 2009.
It will involve improved insulation and boiler controls designed to prevent over 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.
"Helping schools to become more energy efficient is a win-win situation," said the council's deputy leader, Tony Reid.
Mr Reid told the Argus that increased energy efficiency helps to reduce running costs and will contribute to the council's carbon management plan.
"It's also an example to our school students that small changes can make a difference when it comes to efforts to reduce our carbon footprint," he added.
