The Scottish government has launched a new website profiling the noise hotspots of capital city Edinburgh.
Focusing on the impact caused by industry as well as major transportation routes, the strategic maps reveals which areas of the capital suffer the most from noise pollution.
Minister for environment Michael Russell said: "Excessive noise can cause distress to everyone. It is often referred to as the forgotten pollutant but I am determined that more is done to highlight the importance of tackling excessive noise."
He added: "In Scotland we already have the most comprehensive antisocial noise regime in the UK, if not Europe, and we were one of the first countries to introduce noise intervention levels."
Last month the World Health Organisation warned that unruly neighbours, incessant traffic and the clamour of bustling pubs and nightclubs are responsible for 6,500 deaths a year in Britain, through such causes as strokes and heart attacks.
Experts recommend that people who are concerned about the health impact of noise pollution consider investing in double glazing, which can turn a private dwelling into a sanctuary from the din of urban life.
