Residents in Nottingham have been advised by insurance specialists to install double glazing or replacement windows as the city has topped a list of household theft hotspots in the UK.
After analysing theft claims from thousands of its policyholders over the past four years, Endsleigh Insurance Services found the risk of burglary in Nottingham to be 63.3 per cent higher than the national average.
London and Bristol followed the East Midlands destination on the list, while Guilford emerged as one of the safest places to live.
As well as ensuring that all windows and doors are closed when nobody is at home, individuals are advised to cancel milk and newspapers when on holiday.
Endsleigh spokesperson Rhiannon Harris pointed out that statistics from the government's British Crime Survey suggest that overall there has been a gradual decrease in household theft across the UK, with domestic burglary falling by 59 per cent between 1995 and 2007.
"The fact remains, however, that some towns and cities represent a greater risk than others and as our Homes Report shows, every householder in the country needs to be aware of the possibility of burglary," she added.
