A few simple security measures can help protect families from burglaries and could save huge amounts distress and money, one expert claims.
Detective Inspector Ian Motion of central Scotland police has said that changes can be made within the home which can help to prevent break-ins and ensure thieves are not tempted.
His comments come after two flats in the Scottish city of Stirling were broken into within 24 hours, with expensive items such as laptops, iPods and mobile phones stolen.
Det Insp Motion said: "I'd remind people to keep valuables such as laptop computers secure when they are not in use, denying thieves easy opportunities to steal these items."
Burglars can also be deterred by measures taken on the outside of the house such as installing double glazing to make it harder to smash through windows and fitting an alarm.
Double glazed doors and fitting extra locks can also deter would-be thieves from attempting to enter the property, while solid, strong outer doors with peepholes can also help.
