Installing insulation in the nation's homes and businesses is "a step in the right direction" towards cutting carbon emissions, it has been claimed.

David Emery, the managing director of renewable energy company Natural Power Wales, said the provision of adequate insulation in new buildings would enable individual enterprises to do their bit in the battle against climate change.

In an article for Wales' Western Mail, the energy specialist admitted that calculating the carbon emissions created by a new build is complicated.

He wrote: "While it is relatively easy to measure the energy consumed by a building, it is harder to quantify the carbon used in actually creating a new building.

"Achieving low carbon standards through insulation and under-floor heating, though, is a step in the right direction."

Such steps are already being taken in London, where mayor Ken Livingstone recently implemented a scheme intended to see businesses in the capital provided with insulation for their commercial buildings.

While announcing the plans, Mr Livingstone pointed out that improving the energy efficiency of public buildings – through insulation and further measures - is "probably the single most important thing" that Britain can do to cut the country's carbon footprint.
