The UK's drive to construct more green homes has led an increasing number of people to express an interest in building with straw, it has emerged.

Representatives for building advice firm amazonails pointed out that more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of green homes which are constructed with sustainable materials.

Business support manager Rachel Hammond explained that straw bale and other natural building methods have actually been used for longer than cement and concrete.

"Many of the structures found which are 100 years plus are timber-framed, wattle and daub and/or have lime or clay plasters used within them, which are now enjoying a massive revival mostly due to the climate change we are expecting in the near future," she remarked.

She went on to point out that this year's Ecobuild green homes show in London was attended by a significant number of eco-aware homeowners.

In July last year, the government announced plans to introduce eco-towns containing up to 20,000 green homes designed to meet the "highest standards" of sustainability.
