Officials in Liverpool have got together to explore ways of making UK communities more sustainable, including the possibility of a home insulation programme.

PublicNet reports that the UK-wide Sustainable Communities Summit kicked off in the European Capital of Culture last week, with leaders outlining plans to combat fuel poverty as well as boost homes' green credentials.

As preparation for the summit, the Local Government Association (LGA) produced a report which suggested that a national insulation plan would significantly cut carbon emissions as well as domestic energy bills.

Further to this, proposals include an insulation 'action plan', which would identify the homes most in need of double glazing or similar heat-saving home improvements.

Representatives for the LGA claimed that a national insulation programme would also serve to "harness the desire" of homeowners to make their properties more energy efficient.

Jupiter Green investment trust suggested this month that much-publicised renewable energy sources actually play a smaller role than improved insulation and other energy efficiency measures when it comes to fighting climate change.

Double glazing is proven to save heat and energy lost through poorly-insulated windows and doors. With Energy Efficiency windows and doors as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint.
