Developers in the north-eastern conurbation of Teeside are finalising plans for a new eco village that will encompass some 2,000 green homes.
A 1,000-acre site on Wynyard Park has already been set aside and planning permission is expected to be sought from Hartlepool and Stockton councils as soon as February.
If approved, construction of the eco village will be carried out in tandem with an ongoing £450 million development programme aimed at providing three million sq ft of new office space to the region.
And according to Chris Musgrave, chief executive of Wynyard Park, the new eco village proposal reflects a growing desire among professionals to both live and work in environmentally-responsible surroundings.
"Clients are demanding commercial space with environmentally-friendly features and house buyers are also reflecting that," Mr Musgrave commented.
The government has set a target of building ten new eco villages in the near future, each comprising up to 20,000 green homes and deploying the latest insulating and renewable energy technologies.
