UK home buyers are still opting for terraced properties ahead of other forms of housing, but a rise in the number of apartments on the market has come at the expense of the family home, it has been suggested.

Citing Land Registry data, email4property.co.uk managing director David Bexon has said that the traditions associated with terraced housing mean it is firmly established as a British favourite.

The homes are especially popular in the North, Mr Bexon added, with 46 per cent of property sales in Liverpool involving terraced properties.

"They frequently provide a first or second step on the property ladder for young buyers, many of whom may return to these homes to downsize upon retirement or when children leave home," Mr Bexon commented.

The industry figure has also commented this month that "a plethora of one bedroom apartments will do nothing to meet the needs of the growing number of young families, currently unable to step up the housing ladder due to a lack of affordable, family homes."
