Owners of old-fashioned three-storey townhouses could have seen their property accrue value recently as such properties have enjoyed increasing popularity as family homes, according to research.
Despite being as in-demand now as they were in Georgian times, townhouses are likely to have a very different layout these days, according to Connells Estate Agents.
Older buildings often had smaller rooms at the top of the house to accommodate the maid and the nursery, while many modern townhouses have their entire top floor comprised by a bedroom, en suite bathroom and dressing room.
Lisa Shiell, marketing manager for Connells, said: "The layout of the modern townhouse makes them a great choice for families.
"You can let teenagers have the run of the top floor where they can fully enjoy the extra space, invite their friends along and play their music without disturbing the rest of the family who may be watching TV in the lounge."
Ms Shiell said that many couples also make use of the top floor of a large townhouse as a ?private sanctuary? where they can relax and escape from the ?hustle and bustle? of a family home.
