The UK's lack of affordable housing makes the construction of more green homes and 'eco-towns' imperative, it has been claimed.
According to the Town and Country Planning Association, the government's pledge to build three million new homes and ten eco-towns by 2020 represents an opportunity to join the nation's social needs with the environmental and economic issues associated with housing growth.
Gideon Amos, the charity's chief executive, pointed out that the construction of towns dedicated to green homes offers a chance for development that will not "harm the planet through CO2 and related emissions".
"The number of households we are forming as a society is growing more than ever before," he remarked.
"Our priority must be to ensure that eco-towns deliver on their promise of providing truly sustainable communities," he added.
Some of the characteristics of such towns outlined by Mr Amos included a proximity to sustainable public transport, protection of biodiversity and "low and zero-carbon energy provision", aided by home improvements such as upvc windows and double glazing.
Last month, a Dorset housing association revealed that some of its latest eco homes had received an 'excellent' rating from officials, who lauded the Bridport houses' energy-saving features including high levels of insulation and protection against noise pollution.
With Energy Efficiency products supplied as standard, home owners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint. Visit the Safestyle website to see a range of top quality uPVC double glazed products to suit your home.
