The National Insulation Association (NIA) has reminded UK homeowners that winter is the ideal time to install insulation.

With temperatures already dipping below zero in many parts of the country, UK consumers' heating bills are set to soar in the coming months and the NIA has launched a new offensive to promote the benefits of insulation during this period.

In addition to having a positive impact on the environment by reducing your carbon footprint, a simple measure such as installing double glazing insulation can lower your energy bills dramatically.

NIA Chief Executive Neil Marshall said the savings can be so significant that, when coupled with energy supplier subsidies, the home improvements often pay for themselves in less than three years.

"In terms of energy bills the heavy period is really October to February," Mr Marshall went on to say. "So I would argue that the quicker you get insulation installed, the quicker you can make savings on the bills that are going to be coming through next year."

The NIA estimates that over 13 million homes in the UK currently lack adequate insulation.
