Yorkshire residents have bid an emotional farewell to fighter squadrons at the RAF's Leeming base, despite original annoyance at the noise pollution they caused.

When the Ministry of Defence first arrived with its Tornado aircraft 20 years ago, local residents were provided with new double glazing to combat the extra noise, according to the Darlington and Stockton Times.

The newspaper reports that the replacement windows led to such a quiet life that homeowners now regret seeing the last of the squadrons disbanded.

"Some residents will be pleased at the fact that noise levels will be lower, but we also have a lot to thank the RAF for with the trade it has brought into the area," explained parish council member John Kettlewell.

"For more than five years, the council has had few if any complaints," he added.

In related news, it was recently suggested that Britain's own Queen could qualify for a double glazing grant to combat noise pollution caused by aircraft flying over Windsor Castle en route to a proposed expanded runway at Heathrow.
