The UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) is seeking to dispel fears among homeowners and construction groups that green technologies add to the expense of property.
While acknowledging that the installation of eco-friendly features does involve an initial investment, John Alker, public affairs manager for the UK-GBC, is stressing that such measures pay for themselves quickly.
With regard to green insulating technologies such as double glazing - a fundamental requirement for any eco-home - Mr Alker said: "Although the cost of building the home may be more, the cost of running the home will be less. Energy bills are going to be extremely low in the future."
He also pointed out that microgenerated renewable energy supplies in eco-homes would have lower running costs associated with them than the expensive fossil fuels that non-sustainable energy sources depend on.
And he further added that some predicted costs are exaggerations, perhaps propagated by certain construction groups who are showing reluctance to face up to the challenge of switching over to greener working practices.
A recent study by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development found that on average senior developers overestimate the cost of green renovations threefold.
