We have a long history of supporting the wonderful Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice so it came as no surprise when our factory staff voted for them to be one of Safestyle's nominated charities for 2017. Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice offers care and support to children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy, both in their own homes and at their hospice in North Anston, South Yorkshire. The children’s hospice provides an amazingly warm, loving and fun environment for children with life-shortening and life-threatening conditions. They also help and support families and offer them a safe place to relax and create cherished memories.
We were honoured when Bluebell Wood invited us to visit their facilities and see how our donations are helping them run and expand the hospice. All the services they provide are completely free and it was easy to see why their motto is 'living with love and laughter' as they create a really happy and cheerful place for their children and young adults. The hospice offers a wide range of services that make a real difference in providing care and creating amazing memories for the children, their parents and siblings. Their support services, which are bespoke to each family, include end of life treatment and care, music therapy, counselling, sibling support groups, home visits and much more. They have on site accommodation for not only the children but their parents as well to give them a much needed break and rest during such a difficult time.
During our visit we met a mother who had heartbreakingly just lost her six-week old daughter. She spoke about how she had wanted to take her daughter to the seaside but as she was not well enough Bluebell Wood organised a sandpit and created a beach environment with music playing so that the family could have that special day with their child. It was clear that Bluebell Wood offer a positive and calm place where lifelong memories are created; there is a real community feel that makes such a difference to the lives of the families and children they support. The hospice provides a wide range of fun activities such as Shetland pony and animal visits, day trips, a music therapy room, a soft play area, a cinema, a sensory room, an outdoor play park and much more. They even have their own mascot dog, George, who plays and interacts with the children and brings them great joy.
It currently costs the charity an astonishing £4million pounds each year to be able to run the hospice and support 250 families in South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and parts of North Lincolnshire. They are currently looking to expand their services so that they can provide transport to those families who are struggling to make it into the hospice due to their child's limited mobility. As less than 10 percent of their running costs are funded by the government they rely heavily on public donations.
