What are A-rated windows and window ratings explained

Windows are not all equal when it comes to energy saving - far from it! Fortunately, there is an easy way to determine how energy efficient a window is and it’s called the Window Energy Rating or WER for short.

Who calculates it?

The Window Energy Rating is calculated by an organisation call the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC).The BFRC classify the energy efficiency of different windows on a scale ranging from A+ to G, with A+ being the highest rating and G being the lowest. They make this WER calculation based on the following three properties:

  • Heat loss (the 'U' value): how much heat a window transfers
  • Air leakage (the 'L' factor): how penetrable they are to the air
  • Solar gain (the 'G' value): how much they maximise the heat from the sun

What does it mean when choosing your windows?

The work of the BFRC means that the difficult work of measuring exactly how energy efficient a window is has been carried out for you. It means you can be assured that the windows we supply are at the cutting edge of technology and energy efficiency.

It also means you can make a fully informed choice on the basis of an independent third-party assessment. You don’t just have to take our word for it, Safestyle casement windows are A rated for energy efficiency by the BFRC.
