What are A-rated windows and window ratings explained
Windows are not all equal when it comes to energy saving - far from it! Fortunately there is an easy way to determine how energy efficient a window is and it’s called the Window Energy Rating or WER for short.
Who calculates it?
The Window Energy Rating is calculated by an organisation call the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC).The BFRC classify the energy efficiency of different windows on a scale ranging from A+ to G, with A+ being the highest rating and G being the lowest. They make this WER calculation based on the following three properties:
- Heat loss (the 'U' value): how much heat a window transfers
- Air leakage (the 'L' factor): how penetrable they are to the air
- Solar gain (the 'G' value): how much they maximise the heat from the sun
