Why working door hinges are important
Door hinges might seem like a small detail, but they actually play a key role in the functionality of your doors, as well as helping to keep your home secure – and more energy efficient. Taking the time to ensure your hinges are properly adjusted offers several key benefits:
Smooth Operation
Properly adjusted hinges are crucial to make sure that your door swings easily and closes properly, preventing issues like scraping and sticking – both of which can, naturally, cause frustration. A door that opens and closes smoothly eliminates those small issues, while reducing daily annoyances.
Home Security
If your door doesn’t fit properly in the frame, it can create gaps, which can compromise the security of your home. Adjusting the hinges ensures it fits securely, keeping your home secure from potential intruders and giving you peace of mind.
Energy Efficiency
If there are gaps in your door frame, it can lead to draughts. That wastes energy when it comes to both heating and cooling, meaning you could be paying more for your energy bills than you need to. A well-adjusted door creates a tight seal that reduces draughts and helps to save energy costs throughout the year.
Preserving the Door and Frame
If your door hinges aren’t fitted properly, it can put pressure on the hinges, screws and frame – all of which can lead to long-term damage. Ensuring your door is properly aligned with well-adjusted hinges helps to avoid this wear and tear, prolonging the life of your door and saving you money on unnecessary replacements.
Noise Reduction
A door that’s loose or misaligned can rattle or bang when closing it, or during windy conditions. Proper hinge adjustment will keep your door operating smoothly and quietly, contributing to a more peaceful environment at home.
In short, adjusting your door hinges not only makes your home more secure, energy-efficient, and quiet but also helps preserve the longevity of your door – so it’s well worth taking the time to learn how to adjust door hinges, whatever type you have on your doors.
How to check if your door is out of alignment
The first step to check if your door is out of alignment is relatively easy. We recommend simply checking the hinges of your door- a quick fix for a misaligned door could be a matter of just tightening a few screws.
However, there are several other things that could indicate that your door is misaligned, such as if it’s sagging. A door that is misaligned will likely scrape along the floor as you open and close it, or stick whilst trying to move it.
What type of hinge does my composite door have?
There are various different hinges that come with composite doors, and it's important to know which one is which. For example, a flag hinge is used to allow movement of two pieces of material. The hinge consists of two different parts: a male end with a plate and pin, and a female end with a plate and receiving slot. When the parts are joined together, each plate is secured to a new piece of material.
T hinges however, also known as gate hinges, feature a long plate that can be easily fixed to a door. The size of your hinge simply depends on the size or weight of your door!
Butt hinges are probably the most popular choice of all. Favoured because of their reliability and versatility, they are made of two identical leaves connected by a pin and barrel running through their centre. One leaf is fixed into the frame, and the other fixed to the door allowing for a close.
How to adjust composite door hinges
How to adjust flag hinges
- Find the lateral adjustment screw, which may be hidden behind the plastic cap over the hinge.
- To remove, loosen the two screws on the inside of the hinge
- Pop the cap with a flat head screwdriver
- To access the door height and compression screws, you might need to remove the caps on the top and bottom of the hinge.
- Use an Allen key and start by turning 1-2 full rotations, test the difference of the adjustment and then continue to turn in increments until the correct position is reached.
How to adjust T hinges
- There are many similarities between a T hinge and a flag hinge- follow the aboe instructions for flag hinge.
How to adjust butt hinges
- Turn the bottom/top screw to get sideways movement
- Adjust the butt hinge accordingly using an allen key, removing the cap on top to expose the screw.
- If there’s a grub screw in the centre of the hinge, this must loosen before you adjust the pin as it holds the pin in place.
How to adjust composite door height
Adjusting the height of a composite door is relatively simple. Start by removing the centre covers of your hinge by hand, and then with a 4mm allen key loosen the socket screws by about a ⅓ of a turn. Now lift and support the door to the required height whilst securing the socket screws- don’t forget to replace the covers!
How to adjust the compression
To loosen the compression of your door, first loosen the 2 screws that clamp the side plate to the frame plate. Now, lever the side plate with a screwdriver in the adjustment slot and then make sure to secure the screws in the side plate.
How to adjust hinges on bifold doors
If your bifold doors are dragging along the floor or not closing properly, it’s likely that they need a height adjustment. Luckily, this is simple to do:
- Find the hinge adjustment point – this is typically an Allen key screw on the top hinge or a bolt on the hinge itself.
- Turn the screw clockwise to raise the door, or turn it counter-clockwise to lower the door.
If your door has hinge bolts, then you should instead extend them outward to raise the door, and push them in to lower the door height.
Whatever type of door you have, it’s important to work gradually, making small adjustments and checking how the door moves after each turn. This will ensure that the door is properly aligned and operates smoothly.
How to adjust a swinging door
If your door swings open or shut by itself, it can be frustrating. But it’s easy to solve – you just need to focus on the top hinge. If the door tends to close by itself when you want it to stay open, tightening the screws on the top hinge can lift the door slightly. This increases the friction, which will stop the door from swinging shut on its own.
If the door swings open too easily and won’t stay shut, it could be that the top hinge is too tight. Try loosening the top hinge screws a little or adjust the side hinge (if there is one) to bring the door closer to the frame. With every small adjustment, check how the door operates, then adjust it a little more if needed.
How to adjust a composite door to stop draughts
The first thing we recommend doing is check for any cracks or gaps in the seals of your composite door. If there are no noticeable issues with your composite door, then the problem may have to do with the function of your door.
Firstly, take off the plug on the flag hinge and find the allen key spot. Then, insert your allen key and turn to adjust your door- you should be able to see it moving. Then repeat this with all the other hinges until your door is properly balanced.
How to adjust a composite door that drags on the floor
Start off by using an allen key to screw at the door side of the hinge; then, start adjusting whilst the door is still closed. Turn the screw 1-2 rotations clockwise, and then test your door to see if it still drags. Keep on tweaking the hinges until you get a smooth door that doesn’t drag.
I adjusted the hinges but the door is still not aligned
If you’ve adjusted the hinges on your composite door and it is still not aligned, this may be indicative of a larger issue with the door. In this case, it may be best to replace your door hinges, or contact your original supplier to see if they can help under warranty.
As a badly aligned door can cause many issues such as draughts, investing in a new door could also be beneficial. Head on over to get a quote today to better the energy efficiency of your home.
